Grindhouse Review
by Jamal Seamaan

I’ve never seen a movie theatre clear out so fast. Grindhouse; Directed by cult movie heroes Robert Rodriguez (Once upon a time in Mexico, Desperado), and Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction) opened with mixed reviews and an exceedingly confused audience.
Grindhouse is a double feature featuring Robert Rodriguez’s zombie flick Planet Terror, and Quentin Tarantino’s tale of a serial killer and his treasured vehicle Death Proof.
I feel like the negative reviews for this movie came from a lack of prior knowledge to what they were about to watch. The title Grindhouse comes from a place in our cinema history in which usually a downtown movie theatre would be known for “grinding out” non stop double feature B-movies. This same feel is exactly what Rodriguez and Tarantino set out construct, along with fake movie trailers between both movies, missing scenes, etc. So now that you are placed in such a mindset, buckle up for the ride.
The double feature begins with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror. I’ve never been a fan of zombie movies; they rarely differ from each other and always base around the same common zombie attack plot. Planet Terror for the most part does just that, yet for some strange reason I felt engrossed. Whether it be the glorified violence, big explosions, hot female ass, god damnit I was feelin’ it. This flick isn’t for the weak stomach however, possibly the goriest movie I’ve ever seen. All in all, it was pretty fuckin tight.
Following is Tarantino’s Death Proof. What I felt was the better of the two films opens with Tarantino’s trademark witty dialogue filled with pop culture references and so on. Although all the women he casted in Death Proof were hot as hell some of the girls (mostly this annoying black lady-’I still love you sista’ and a chick with thee most irritating New Zealand accent I have ever heard) made some of Tarantino’s dialogue awkward; it was hard to appreciate how golden the dialogue was coming out of an galling New Zealander. Kurt Russell plays a kick-ass serial killer and keeps you nail-biting the entire flick. Death Proof closes with one of the best car chase scenes in recent cinema history with a big payout. Grindhouse is a movie experience no one should miss, but its cool guys, just wait for it to hit DVD.
THE QUESTION: Is it worth your hard earned 8 bucks to go see? Or shall you just rent?
THE ANSWER: It’s two good movies in one, if you got the cash, go for it!
